Since 1998, American Renaissance School has been a downtown Statesville community school with the sole focus of educating and helping children reach their highest potential. During this time, ARS has developed many local partners within our Statesville Community, achieved consecutive years of exceeding state academic targets, and recently renewed our charter for a third decade. We have turned away many children over the past 20 years that desired an ARS education due to space constraints. Today, we are excited to announce the next chapter in the ARS story. This chapter will ensure ARS continues to provide the best possible educational environment for our children, the space needed for our school to grow enrollment, and ensure our place in downtown Statesville for decades to come.
After years of exploration, planning, and negotiation, ARS is excited to announce the construction of a permanent ARS facility to be located in downtown Statesville. With the financial support from BB&T Capital Markets through a private bond acquisition, we have selected G.L. Wilson Construction to design and build a fantastic new facility on our Tradd Street lot and adjacent property currently under contract. The new ARS facility will provide a modern and enhanced learning environment for our children to grow and develop. The facility will include purposefully designed spaces for our Arts programs, enhanced classrooms and labs to grow our STEAM initiative, additional classrooms to accommodate future enrollment growth, a spacious multipurpose area for students and families to gather, and a much-needed gymnasium/auditorium. The building will be designed in a way that preserves the charm and history of ARS while also providing a best-in-class and safe learning environment.
The decision to construct a new building was not made lightly and not without many struggles. At the direction of the Board of Directors, the facilities committee initially embarked on a facility plan that included acquisition of the current elementary campus building (the Carolina Motor Company building) and new construction of a smaller building project on Tradd Street that would have included a gymnasium/auditorium with additional encore class space. The committee spent countless hours doing due diligence and compiling information to make a compelling offer for the building to include property valuation, environmental assessments, and remodel / construction cost. Taking the aforementioned factors into account, the ARS Board of Directors approved and made a purchase offer for the elementary building. The shareholders of the Carolina Motor Company did not accept the offer and stood firm at their original asking price. After several unsuccessful counter offers and attempts to negotiate a purchase of the elementary building, the ARS Board of Directors began exploring alternative solutions, ultimately choosing the plan for an all-new facility located on Tradd Street.
We anticipate construction to start in the summer of 2020 with a projected move-in date of December 2021. During the construction period, there will be no disruption to our day to day operations with exception to activity on the Tradd street property. We are developing plans to accommodate recess and PE classes during the construction period.
There will be much more information on the project to share in the near future. ARS will announce informational meeting sessions for parents and the community to share the details and design features for this exciting project and to answer any questions that you might have.
We look forward to sharing more exciting news with you soon. Thank you for your support!
